Why did Ukraine / Zalensky suspend elections AND throw opposition politicians in jail

Its suspicious to me that the left, the Democrats and MOST of the Republicans are supporting a corrupt Eastern European dictator that has suspended elections in the Ukraine. Whats the real reason for their undying support? It HAS to be laundering money, right?
