For over two years, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been copying everything I do. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but now it’s become clear. Whenever I buy new clothes, they ask where I got them and then buy the exact same items for themselves or for her daughter. Recently, I got my fourth ear piercing, and the very next day, my mother-in-law took her daughter to get three more piercings, and she got one too. My father-in-law is usually very kind, and one day he wanted to buy me a dress for an occasion we had. He gave me three options to choose from, and I picked the one I liked. But a week later, when I received the dress, it wasn’t the one I chose. My father-in-law explained that my mother-in-law didn’t like my choice and selected a different dress for me—one I wouldn’t wear. Interestingly, she bought the dress I had picked for her 14-year-old daughter, claiming it was too revealing for a 23-year-old like me.
This pattern continues: they copy what I wear, where I go, and even what I do. It’s exhausting and leaves me feeling like I can’t express myself freely. I’m unsure of how to handle this situation.
