Which is the best position to store books, horizontal or vertical? Is it the same for paperback and hardcover books?

I'm working on setting up my library. Most of my books are horizontal for paperbacks and vertical for hardcovers. Btw, I don't have a bookshelf yet, just a small table where I keep them.
