Where can I go to make friends ?

I have friends and whatnot but we really don't hang out that much. Some of em moved far away some of them have kids, some just are too fucked up to be around. I've looked into going to some type of clubs like chess clubs or hiking clubs. I'm also a musician and I'm 21 yrs old but all the live venues near me are people in their 40's (which i don't have a problem with some of my friends are in their 40's) All the live venues with people my age are so far away. People say " you just have to put yourself out there" Well of course I know that I just don't know where to go to start.
