What got you into classic fiction?

I’ve been a reader my whole life but I started enjoying classic fiction/literature into my early 20s. Before then I mainly read sci-fi/fantasy and horror fiction. Stephen King got me into reading in general so for that he’ll always have my respect as a writer and I’ll always pick up a new book. That said, the pipeline that got me into classics was reading horror fiction. Stephen King got me interested in reading Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. Poe really hooked me into the classics with his short fiction and poetry. I also read Shirley Jackson and Mary Shelley afterwards and fell in love with their writing and unique voices.

After that I got into Fyodor Dostoyevsky who changed the way I saw fiction. Dostoyevsky was a foundational author for me and now 3 of his books make my top 10 favourite books. I also got a taste for the gothic classics and a year later I had read all the Brontë sisters. Now I really enjoy literary fiction and I’m reading Lolita at the moment. Fyodor Dostoyevsky is what made me decide to become a writer as well. I’m curious, how did you get into literature?
