What does the seagull sybolize in Chekhov's "the seagull" ?

hi guys :)

I have a literature exam soon and my teacher doesn't teach well and now I'm lost.

He kept talking about how the seagull is an important motive/ symbol but didn't actually explain why, so I'd really appriciate it if someone could explain it to me and maybe give some examples too :)
