Trying to find a book I read a long time ago?

Hey yall. I wanted to send reccomend this book to my younger sister because of some relevant themes, but cannot for the life of me remember its title.

The title had Shakespeare in it. Letters to Shakespeare maybe? It was about a boy going to school during the Cold War iirc. His dad was abusive, he had a classmate that was Japanese, which was a point of note because of the time in which the book was set.

There are a few passages I recall that may be relevant to political points of contention and kind of thought my sisyer would appreciate that.
