The question is why the hell would Ross and Jake do something like this knowing they would be found out?

What is the benefit?

This is the type of thing you'd do to sabotage the entire alien discloaure movement. Meaning, if you want to get people to dismiss the entire possibily that NHI exists, this is precisely what you would do to turn people away and make them not believe in the possibiity any more.

Other than that, I can't think of a rational explanation for someone to do this.

Or, maybe it's an alien egg shaped craft. Maybe we're wrong about our assumptions.
