RedNote/Xiaohongshu is truly terrifying

I have tried to post or comment about my experience on every platform I know of, including coding and censoring my language, only to be immediately deleted or apparently entirely shadow banned. I find this insane, particularly since the information I am sharing is actually in support of the US government (for once in my life.) I've joined this sub today in hopes that I can at least post HERE.

I have been an active user and fan of TikTok for the last few years.

I have just completed a round-the-clock, six day marathon on RedNote, in which I engaged in as many complex conversations with as many Chinese citizens as I could. I spent over 80 hours speaking with people of all ages, classes, occupations, and within every region. (I possess the power of superfocused ADHD mania, along with a neurotic amount of curiousity. I am also doggedly relentless, and cultural anthropology is my thing, so trust me when I say that I have done my due diligence.)

This was an experience that I was not going to take for granted, and as someone who has had a lot of exposure living in and around the Chinese American community, my interest in RedNote was not in the superficial, fabricated videos of Chinese food and hobbies. I went straight for the gold and started hitting the DM's. Some of the most interesting/horrifying information I received came from users that were initially trying to scam me, and those who were using VPN's in an attempt to speak freely.

After six days, I am exceedingly grateful for the knowledge and insight that I gained, but am equally horrified by what I have been able to witness firsthand. This was an intimate look into an authoritarian regime that I never imagined I would get to see or experience. I have plenty to tell, but below you will find the message that I hope will reach TikTok users. They are not at all understanding that "data privacy" isn't just about your demographic info and your online habits. It is about foreign adversaries collecting information on what you BELIEVE or what you MAY believe and then influencing American public opinion by planting false information and utilizing the algorithm to push this info to their targeted American demographic. I highly suspect that the migration to TikTok (which I began seeing as random comments of "go to Rednote! It's awesome!") was intentionally executed by the Chinese and their bots or foot soldiers on TikTok. I also believe that the Chinese knew we were coming (because they "invited" us all over the TT comments. ) They prepared their citizens to "welcome" (brainwash) us. I have many screenshots, but am attaching one that will show you exactly what it looks like to live under this type of rule. It is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE that we stop wasting time online calling other Americans "stupid" and start helping to educate our people. We have forgotten anything we may have ever been taught about how the Chinese Communist Party infiltrates and brainwashes with propaganda. This is not at ALL well known among young Americans.

  1. Isn't it a little weird how welcoming the Chinese are? Almost TOO nice,...Stepford Wives kind of nice. Yeah. That's because it IS weird. In no way am I saying that Chinese people aren't nice, or welcoming, or warm, or friendly. But people need to know that they are literally groomed from birth to behave this way. They are educated on how to communicate with us, on etiquette, and The Chinese government encourages them to share positive narratives about China, emphasizing economic progress, infrastructure, and cultural heritage. (Soft power). They are discouraged from speaking about anything that portrays China as anything other than safe, modern, and culturally vibrant. Once you talk to enough of them, you start hearing the same phrases, slogans, mottos, grand photographs, stories about China's superiority in, well, basically everything. This superiority is also mixed in with Taoism, which they say is not a religion, but is totally a religion to them, and apparently to their ancestors who they speak to, and who tell them what to do. Like imperialistic things.
  2. Every Chinese citizen has a mobile phone that includes two apps that are required by law - WeChat, and Alipay. These are "super apps" that integrate messaging, social media, e-commerce, banking, health tracking, and government related services. These apps surveil and control their entire lives, and score them according to China's social credit system, which scores citizens based on their financial reliability, social behavior, and political compliance. This is some real life Black Mirror shit, guys. Here's a ChatGPT link for more info on how deeply this technology is embedded into Chinese life, and how effective it is at controlling the population.
  3. They are 100%, absolutely, no doubt about it, deeply homophobic, and MILITANTLY transphobic. This is not something that is overt in any way, but it becomes obvious very quickly. The Chinese are told, and they wholeheartedly believe, that our nation's problems are a result of rampant sexual immorality. They are under the impression that we do not punish sexual predators, that pedophilia runs rampant, and that we are surgically butchering our children and creating "mutants." This is not something that they necessarily blame us for directly. They pretty much place all of the blame on the US government, who they obviously believe is pure evil incarnate, because that is what they are indoctrinated to believe. They repeat like it is some sort of memorized Bible verse that the United States has continually inched their warships closer and closer to their peaceful and prosperous country and have built many army bases. They are dedicated to the cause of making sure that foreigners understand that China is absolutely blameless and innocent, and that their only goal is to help the human race advance and to unite us all together in some "We Are The World" type shit. It's like floating through "It's a Small World" in reverse and it's super creepy.
  4. They believe those old classic stereotypes about us being lazy, undisciplined, stupid, etc. from American media that is specifically chosen by their government to be shown to them, in order to portray Americans exactly as they want us to be portrayed. When you ask them to consider the fact that their own government is manipulating the truth, they will say "this is depressing, we shouldn't speak of such things" (because duh, their phones are like FB Messenger level surveillance x1000.). They will also flat out deny factual evidence, either because the information has truly been kept from them, or because they are in complete delulu cognitive dissonance land. I was not able to get a single person to tell me that they had heard of the 75,000 Chinese baby girls that were adopted to American families over the course of the last few decades. They will straight up say that this did not happen, and could never happen, because the people of China value children too highly. They are SHOCKED to hear that one of the reasons the US has economic problems is because of our reliance on their cheap exports. They have never heard of low quality Chinese products before? What product? Who was the maker? Surely this product was made in Japan.
  5. Violence is glorified. Very much so. "Dying in war is an honor" type thing. In fact, they were very eager to tell me how it sounds like the best idea right now is for us to start a war.
  6. They are pro-factory farming, they care little about inhumane treatment of feed animals, pro GMO, they smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol regularly, are extremely (cruelly) sexually repressed, have a birth rate crisis because 1 - they relinquished thousands of female infants to the US so now there is a gender imbalance and 2 - they have BRIDE PRICES, which are unreachable for many young Chinese men, and has (surprise surprise) led to trafficking and other horrific shit.
  7. From the state of my RedNote inbox, they are dealing with an epidemic of fraud from within their own country unlike anything the US has ever experienced. That app is also SWARMING with infiltration by their government and it is absolutely an attempt to talk to us and cause further unrest and division. I am beginning to understand why our government has a bit of a problem with these folks and how they may be able to turn us against our own country. Good thing that could never happen.
