If you consider the age of the universe its possible that mankind advanced long ago to the point of developing some kind of reality omnibus that blends virtual and physical reality as need be for all time. So if this reality could be virtual there could also be remnants of technology from base reality or true physical reality. Finding that technology and proving it's existence might be one way out of here.
