Hi ! My name is Shardul and I am in my early fifties. I have always been an avid reader and admire great writers who can express the deepest human emotions using the minimum of words. My favourite short story is "After Twenty years" by O Henry. It packs an emotional punch in just 2 pages. It is a masterclass in story telling!
Putting all my fears aside, I have written the following short story. I would be curious to know if it holds your attention? How does the story make you feel? Please respond and let me know. Your feedback might just give a push in the right direction to a fledgling writer. Thank you.
Story title: The day I fired my dad
"I fired my dad last week.
He was working as usual, in our warehouse. Early mornings, stubborn rituals, handwritten logs, tea breaks, paper receipts from the '80s.
He wasn’t fast. He made too many mistakes. To be honest, he was really slow. The guys liked him, but I didn’t. I told him we had to get him off the shop floor. He was getting too much in the way. He nodded and said, “Sorry I was slowing things down son.” No tears. He just ambled out without looking back.
Today morning, he didn’t show up as usual. Instead, there was a box near the gate. A flask of tea. Old carbon copies of sales receipts. One receipt caught my eye. It was yellowed, faded. It was the first sale he had ever made. The receipt was in his own handwriting. In the company name section, my name next to his, “WILLABY & SON.” I used to think I built this place. Now... I’m not so sure.
