Love/hate reaction to Sally Rooney in the book community

I am what you can call a level higher than newbie and two level below veteran readers. So in that sense I have a decent idea about the book community. And Sally Rooney is the name I've noticed to be one of the overhyped and one of the most criticised authors at the same time. This is probably the reason I'm yet feared to read her book. Some people overhype her writings to the sky and some people criticise her writings to the ground. It's not new that a author gets both hype and criticism at the same time. But she's one of those very popular authors whose all books are rated below 4 in Goodreads. Even Colleen Hoover's books got ratings over 4. The same Colleen Hoover who is mostly infamous in the same category. I understand that rating isn't the only factor to judge a author but it's still one of those factors when a new reader looks into before picking up a book. Another very popular and infamous author, Murakami who have divided the community into two, have many of his books over 4 star ratings. So I'm curious what the reason of Sally Rooney's below 4 ratings could be despite her overpopularity.

Also I've decided to read Normal People as my very first Sally Rooney book. On the other hand I heard that Intermezzo which is her latest book, is more polished than her previous ones. So I'm confused between these two books.
