Lab Leak: There was no follow up on modification?

With the lab leak seemingly the most likely, and no longer a conspiracy theory, I'm curious as to why there was no follow up on genetic modification, gain of function.

I sit here and wonder what the global, specifically economic impacts/war would be if Covid was actually a (Chinese) government biological weapons program, since the military took over the lab years ago, after kicking the French out.

Is the public truth worth the consequences that could bring..
