In the past, while there were definitely rich writers, their seemed to be more diverse backgrounds. Working class people were definitely given much more of a platform. However, I feel that writing like Kafka, Thomas Pynchon, or Herman Melville would be impossible today. Not just because readership has changed, but because the corporate powers that be want it that way. Kafka was a insurance officer and Melville was a customs officer for example. Whereas now it's mostly rich white women who write and get published. Ofc Han Kang won the Nobel prize, but even she came from a privileged background. It seems working class men and women in particular are being silenced. I've had a few short stories myself published, but since I've been sending a novel I've written out I either get told that it's good but not fit for the market, or that they're looking for more diverse voices.
I can't help but feel unless I'm rich and got connections, which I don't have I cannot get my work out there. Yes self publishing is a thing but I want to be an artist first and not a business man. I'm considering giving up publishing in general since either way it seems like a crapshoot. Especially since no one wants dudes anymore.
