Is it really necessary to compete with other guys?

Apart from a few places where I’m obligated to compete (like a job interview for example), I don’t want to compete with anybody. I just want to do my own thing apart from everybody else and compete with my past self.

Everyone tells me that guys should compete with each other but I don’t really feel that way.
