Is dating while mid 40s using apps a futile effort?

Is at as bad for middle aged adults as it is for your typical 20 something? Are more people serious about actually finding someone by 40 or is it just for hookups? Just curious on anyone's opinion who have been using apps to date that are 40+, thanks.
