I Treated My Friends Like Sisters, But They Let Me Be Humiliated in Public

4 hours ago 4

I went shopping at a busy market, but I won’t disclose the name because both of my friends (A and B) are very active on Reddit and they’re the ones who introduced me to it.

Quick backstory:
I’m a year older than them; they were juniors to me in college. Since I don’t have any sisters, I treated them like my younger sisters. I’ve even gifted them expensive makeup and dresses on their birthdays. I’ve never expected anything in return.

Now, here's the issue:
I went shopping with A and B to one of the busiest markets. They didn’t buy a single thing, while I bought a couple of items for myself. They just kept dragging me from shop to shop, wasting both my time and the shopkeepers' time.

We started at street shops and eventually moved to a more sophisticated store that was packed. A was off somewhere else speaking on phone , and B was sticking with me. I saw an item that I thought would go really well with the dresses I bought earlier. The stall was even more crowded, and I couldn’t reach the item I wanted. There was a lady standing there doing nothing, so I politely asked her to move three times. The third time, she snapped, saying, “Saying excuse me won’t do anything; I still need to look” When I bent down to grab the item, she screamed at me and pushed me with her elbow. That push caused me to accidentally bump into a couple, and all three of them started yelling at me, saying I was causing a disturbance. The shopkeeper yelled at me and told me to leave, which I did.

Meanwhile, A wasn’t even there, and B just shifted in the corner, watching everything. Later, B claimed she hadn’t been paying attention. Neither of them even asked me what happened, even though the whole store saw me get humiliated.

After the store incident, I wanted to go home, but they still wanted to shop, At the end of the day, they still hadn’t bought anything. On the way back on the train B and I bought some dirt cheap earring, B paid for the earrings I bought because my UPI wasn’t working. and when I got home, A asked me to pay her back 50 rupees for earring instead of checking on me—despite me feeding them, paying for their autos cab rides, and gifting them things multiple times.

Here’s what’s bothering me:

  1. I didn’t stand up for myself in the shop because I really don’t like creating scenes in public. Plus, the people in the shop were speaking their own language among themselves , and I was speaking in English, so they were clearly cornering me

  2. The friends I considered my sisters didn’t even ask what happened, let alone stand up for me.

  3. I stayed friends with them and did not confront them. Part of the reason is that they ruined another girl’s reputation by spreading rumors. While I’m not saying the rumors were wrong, they were the only ones who knew the truth and told everyone.

Just venting because this has been bothering me. After this couple more incidents happen or maybe I started noticing things which i was neglecting before. I have stopped talking to them now but not sure should i confront or let them drift away with no contact. Also the shop incident how people can be so unkind
