Have people forgotten to teach respect to their children?

I don't talk about just this generation, but overall... I feel there are very few people who truly respects one another. Homeless people feel most of this disrespect, but you can see the disrespect pretty much everywhere. Grown people acting like children when they lack respect.

How do you even teach respect to someone? I can't remember where i learned to respect all individuals, it just feels like second nature to me. I know it's easy to lack respect for those who do not respect you, but even then i always try to respect them.

Is it because we try to control "selfish" nature of children too much that they never learn selflessness in the process? Do we nurture the selfish traits too much or too little?

I remeber from my childhood that i always hated to be the center of attention, especially during my birthdays. But i was very selfish kid, i always wanted to do things i wanted to do, i did not even listen my parents that much.

If i have to make a guess what made me learn to respect others must have come from the fear of failure or dissapointment, i did not want to put myself in a position where others could show disrespect to myself, thus i did not want to treat others how i did not want to be treated. Is it healthy kind of respect? Probably not. I can see issue where no advancements in certain fields are achieved if people are afraid to put themselves out there at the risk of being disrespected.
