I Think We’re Living in a "Dead Society" — Hear Me Out

4 hours ago 3

Hey everyone,

So, I’ve been thinking a lot lately, and I feel like I’ve stumbled onto something unsettling. It’s kind of inspired by the Dead Internet Theory, but instead of the internet being "dead," I think society itself has become scripted and lifeless—almost like we’re surrounded by real-life NPCs running on auto-pilot. I’m calling it the Dead Society Theory, and I’m curious if anyone else feels the same.

Here’s the gist of it:

1. Social Interactions Feel Pre-Programmed

Ever notice how small talk, work conversations, or even interactions with strangers feel like you’re all just following a script?

  • "How are you?" "Good, you?" "Good." — End of meaningful interaction.
  • In meetings, people just regurgitate the same corporate buzzwords: "Let’s circle back," "Leverage our synergies," etc. It’s like nobody’s thinking or being present—they’re just playing a role society has pre-written for them.

2. People’s Opinions Seem Copy-Pasted

Scroll through social media or listen to conversations about politics or current events—doesn’t it feel like everyone’s repeating the same talking points they heard from news outlets, influencers, or memes?
There’s barely any original thought, just endless echo chambers where everyone’s repeating the same "approved" take.

3. Life Has Been Reduced to Consumer Loops

Every few months, there’s a new "thing" we’re all supposed to obsess over.

  • New iPhone drop? Everyone lines up.
  • Seasonal Starbucks drinks? Gotta get that Instagram post.
  • Holiday sales? Time to buy the same junk in different packaging. It’s like society has programmed these "rituals" into us so we just rinse and repeat without asking ourselves if we even care.

4. Performative Everything

Whether it’s on social media or in public spaces, so much of life feels performative now—like everyone’s an actor playing to an invisible audience.

  • Posting selfies at protests instead of focusing on the cause.
  • Filming yourself helping someone just to go viral. Even in real life, people act like they’re characters in a sitcom episode instead of just being present in the moment.

5. "Real" Conversations and Connections Are Hard to Find

When’s the last time you had a deep, meaningful, unscripted conversation where someone wasn’t checking their phone or filtering their words through social norms? Feels rare, right? Instead, we get this constant barrage of transactional interactions—coworkers, service staff, acquaintances—all following their roles in the larger "game" of society.

Why Does It Feel Like This?

Maybe it’s just the way the modern world works:

  • Algorithms IRL: Social media and news feed algorithms have bled into real life. People mirror what they see online because those are the "approved" behaviors.
  • Corporate Conditioning: Marketing and media tell us what to buy, how to feel, and even what to aspire to. We’re just playing into their scripts.
  • Systemic Loops: Work, sleep, shop, repeat. We’re all stuck in these loops that make life feel pre-programmed.

So... Is Society Actually "Dead"?

I’m not saying people aren’t real or conscious, but maybe most of us are stuck playing roles written for us by larger systems. We’ve become "bots" in our own lives, responding to stimuli instead of making meaningful, independent choices.

Or maybe I’m just overthinking it. 😅

Has anyone else felt this way? Is society becoming more scripted, or am I losing it? What’s been your experience?
