I hate how american colleges place such a big focus on extracurriculars in admissions

At my high school, sports, band, debate, and so on are all highly selective and talk about how they need to be picky to field a successful team. It sucks for kids who got nothing going for them but good grades because there is no way for them to get the extracurricular activities needed to look good for college applications.
