I guess it’s true: nothing in life is free.

Nothing in life really is free. I’ve heard this phrase before and I used to disagree with it and say to myself, “the best things in life are free”. But after actually experiencing certain things in life, there’s no use in sugarcoating it anymore because NOTHING in life really is free, whether I like it or not.

This is just through my perspective and it’s fine if someone else has a different one than I do, but I’m gonna stick to this statement. The things that people claim are free in life but in reality they actually AREN’T, are:

Love: sure it may seem to have no cost, but you still have to work in order to get people to love you and vise versa. Of course you’re family will love you the moment you’re born, but as you grow older and actually develop you’re brain, you’ll learn that it actually takes effort to make love continue, especially with couples! So love shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Laughter: I know this might sound silly but even laughter isn’t necessarily “free” as nobody is just born laughing, the cost is that you have to find or witness something funny which can require your time.

Friendship: similarly to love, you have to work for building friendships and relationships in general especially with people who are polar opposites to your personality. It also requires a lot more effort for those who are shy or introverts, and find it hard to make friends. That’s why they say friendship truly is a gift so you can nurture it after working hard to maintain it, which is sometimes harder than making it. And as someone who used to have problems making friends due to being an introvert, I can strongly agree to that.

Nature’s beauty: you can walk outside, look at and breathe the fresh air of nature at any time of your life. BUT that still requires your time to go outside and half experience or fully experience it such as driving to a forest. And things like oxygen, require your lungs to inhale so not even that is just given to every single person, like the people with lung problems.

Kindness: same thing with love and friendship, kindness requires gratitude and effort such as it takes time to truly show the world how kind you are by doing things like saving someone which requires effort, or just picking up a pencil that you’re classmate dropped beside you and giving it back to them which requires them to drop it first.

Opinions: the saying “everyone’s entitled to their own opinion” is generally true. However, no matter what opinion you have, there is always going to be at least ONE person who disagrees with you, making it not truly “free of charge” since the charge is having to deal with that someone who disagrees with your point of view. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine to disagree with someone, but at the same time it is what it is.

Learning: this really ain’t free lol. Learning requires you to go to school which not everyone can do especially in today’s economy, unless you’re a minor. And even if you’re not in regular school and do home-schooling instead, it still requires patience and effort to get new knowledge in your head such as developing reading skills to read a book to understand what you’re reading and learn from it if it’s educational, or teaching a baby how to walk or talk.

Free will: lastly, not even this is in the literal sense “free”. Think about it, as previously stated, minors are basically required to go to school or get some kind of education, and while at school there are RULES to follow and even at home with you’re parents telling you what to do and so on and so forth. I’m not saying rules aren’t important because they for sure are, but they don’t require you to just do what you want whenever or wherever you want. It’s the same thing with work and getting a job, there are procedures you need to follow and respect while at work and if you mess up a whole bunch of times, you’ll get fired. And EVERYONE needs a job in order to live in this world. And even those unfortunate enough to not have a job and end up homeless, even they have rules to follow such as to not be in a specific space because as people, not myself included like to put up signs saying, “no homeless allowed in this area!”, or not even putting up signs just flat out saying it to a homeless person, even if the person saying it is not in a position of power and are just saying it for the sole purpose of being a douchbag. Lastly, simply being without a “proper” home can get you arrested or even worse…

So that’s pretty much all I had to say about the phrase, “nothing is free in life” with those examples. There are obviously plenty of more examples to go around but I have better things to do than to list every single one of them. I just wanted to raise awareness for the people trying to figure out life for themselves. And although nothing is truly “free”, you should still find happiness and live your life to the fullest and please value every fortunate thing you receive or encounter and try your best to be the best person you can be.

I’m signing off… have a Good Friday! 🫡
