How have people been acting IRL with you?

I went to the mall the other day by myself after a long time. It had been about 10 years since I had been in the same mall. Some stores had changed some stores were the same. I had been on some other threads about how peoples behavior has changed over the years and post covid.

The first thing I was greeted to after taking a few steps in the entrance was a guy and maybe his girlfriend about to walk down the stairs, and I wasn't looking at them or anything just minding my own business. The guy then makes a weird noise like he was speaking in a foreign language at a high pitch. I don't know if anyone has seen those pranks where the guy goes up to a guy and makes the high pitches "haaiiiyyaahhhh" sound? Something like that. I could tell it was directed at me.

I went into a store I needed to buy some shirts etc. I was helped more than I can ever remember by people working there, probably because there was nobody else in the store, but as a younger person I remember they would just pretty much ignore me when I came in, thinking I wouldn't buy anything.

Later I went to sit down because I had the day I thought since I haven't been in this mall in years I would check movie timings. There was a morbidly obese guy and his slightly less morbidly obese girlfriend sitting close by. I'm minding my own business looking at my phone and the guy goes "Hey Boy" kind of loudly but not to my face, and the girl looks at me, laughs and they both get up and lumber away.

I cannot understand people or why they do this or why they think this is funny or why it makes them feel good. This didn't seem to be so blatant and common place to do this kind of "fucking with people" behavior as much as before.

A number of thoughts go through my head as I analyze all the possible reasons. The other aspect, and I don't want to make it a race thing but it does go through my head as a possibility. I am an Indian born and brought up in the States. The first couple was African American and the second was Mexican American. Do with that what you will, either it has no context on the interaction or maybe it does, but I don't know that's why I ask.

This just seems like systematic societal breakdown of just common decency and courtesy and regular living around other people behavior. Is this also partly why social spaces like malls are dying? People have just become dicks so other people are just fed up? The people in stores of course have to be nice, they are selling stuff, it's such a drastic change from in the store to outside the store.

I'm really avoiding social interactions because of shit like this. In any case I still went and enjoyed my movie later because fuck them they aren't going to ruin my WHOLE day just 5 min of it. Has anyone experienced stuff like this? Are they just making fun of me because I look like I can be made fun of?
