How do you read something that have characters you absolutely HATE?

That's been my biggest weakness for me. Having characters that annoy me or that I despise make me unable to enjoy it. I suspect that's why I didn't like the Catcher in the Rye while loving No Longer Human and even the Stranger lol.

And the worst thing is, there are so many great novels in which the existence of a character that I dislike make me wanna drop it so much because it completely kills enjoyment. I don't think that I self insert or anything, so I'm not sure what I can really do, because I really do want to be able to read more kinds of novels, not just ones with characters I like and agree with.
