How do people survive in adulthood when things are already really competitive in high school?

I hate how so many older people dismiss high school and not consider how hard and intense high school is. Sports teams, band, drama, and other extracurriculars are extremely hard to join. Classes are intense and requires studying up to midnight. It is already a giant rat race, and I can't imagine how it is even worse in college or at a job.
