Avoiding eye contact??

I get there’s a larger societal distrust toward others for varying, understandable reasons. But when did avoiding eye contact like it’s the plague become the new norm? It’s honestly so isolating to not exchange pleasantries or simply smile and wave. Are we doomed?

PS - this problem goes beyond the younger generations
