Let me start by asking this: How can professors use AI to detect AI? It’s kind of ironic tbh.
Anyways, the class I’m taking is Abnormal psychology. Now im no Shakespeare, but I know how to right a well written essay. In fact, I never got below a 90 in my English comp class EVER! So it’s insulting to think that a non-English teacher would accuse me of using any tool to write a paper as simple as what she was asking for.
For context, I don’t write any of my college papers using large vocabulary words or “advanced” punctuation because I was trying to avoid being wrongly accused of such a thing, but here we are.
Now, this specific teacher literally has complicated my work since I start her class (it’s a synchronous class) and she’s giving me anywhere from 98%-100% on all my papers and test, making sure to give me ample feedback (it’s always positive). So to wake up this morning and see a notification that I received a big whopping zero is absurd.
The message I received goes as follows:
“My assessment of your submission is that some of the assignment submission was not in your own words.
All future writing assignments need to be in your own words and your own explanations. Future plagiarism would need to be dealt with at the College level per the syllabus. I have pasted below the Academic Integrity Policy from the syllabus.
Academic integrity is a fundamental component of a college community. Each student has a responsibility to understand, accept and comply with the Schoolcraft College Student Code of Conduct. Cheating and plagiarism are examples of violations of the code. All acts of dishonesty will be reported to the College. Your first act will result in a zero for that assignment. If you commit two acts of academic dishonesty during the course, then you will receive a zero for the course. You may NOT use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Bing, Grammarly etc. for the writing assignments. All assignments must be generated in your own words using a MS 365 docx file and the history of the document should be saved so that you can document your own writing for the assignments. The final docx will be uploaded to Blackboard but the history of the file needs to be available if requested by the instructor. Students must contact me if they wish to use any writing software other than a docx file for the writing assignments.
Also, as you write here are additional reminders. While this is not an exhaustive list, it is NOT acceptable to: Copy/paste from a source – EVER This includes websites This includes primary sources This includes our textbook This includes work you completed for another course Use examples from other sources in your applications for the assignments Discuss exam questions/answers before the deadline
It IS acceptable to (please notice the statement “answer in your own words”) Search the Internet for an answer, digest the information, and answer in your own words Read the textbook, digest the information, and answer in your own words Read primary sources, digest the information, and answer in your own words Use sources to understand and then come up with your own examples and applications. Discuss your assignment with a classmate or tutor, digest the information, and answer in your own words”
I apologize for the inconvenience of having to read all that 😭. But anyways, as I’m reading what my professor sent, I’m realizing that my paper breaks NONE of these rules what so ever. (I will attach a link to a copy of my paper so you may review it yourself).
I sent them this respect email in response to their shocking accusation:
“Good afternoon Professor lady-Gaga,
I hope this message finds you well. I recently received a grade of 0/20 on my poop analysis paper, and I wanted to respectfully address the concern regarding the use of AI/plagiarism. I want to be sure that you know that I did not use AI, plagiarism or any other outside tool to complete this assignment. All the work I’ve submitted was done by me, after I invested time and effort into researching and writing the assignment based on the provided course material and my own understanding.
I do understand the importance of academic integrity, and I want to make sure there is no misunderstanding regarding any of my work. If needed, Id be happy to provide clarification on any part of the assignment that raised concern for you. I would also appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further so that we can reach a resolution or mutual agreement, as I do not feel that my grade accurately reflects my effort and work.
Thank you for your time and understanding, Michale Jackson the lll.
(Had to use code names for the sake of privacy).
Any advice is greatly appreciated as this is my first time dealing with this.
