Whenever I've had my mind changed (about a person, politics, religion, belief), it usually involved someone of the opposite side being kind above all considerations.
I used to be a very black and white thinker about how the world is and what people should/shouldn't do (for some things I still am). However, whenever I encountered someone who challenged my beliefs, every time I changed my mind was because of interacting with a kind person of the opposite side who validated my experience.
On the reverse, whenever I've helped influence someone it was because they informed me that they felt respected by me and that I saw them for who they were. Even with people today that I don't agree with, I'll still take action to oppose them....but I know that if I show kindness to them first above all, it is more likely I will have an influence on them to see things my way (it is important to be careful not to make influencing others the primary objective in relationships).
Just my two cents, feel free to question or critique constructively.
