Why are there so many fantasy writers now?

Hey all, so I'm a 26 y.o. guy and I'm an aspiring writer. I have a short story published in a lit magazine but aside from that nothing particularly special. I've tried going writing things to meet other writers thinking that I could find people to talk about books with. Now I do like fantasy sometimes and I'm not opposed to reading it. I love Tolkien, George RR Martin, and Phillip Pullman's His dark materiel's was a favourite as a kid. Sometimes my work does fall under magical realism and speculative fiction, but more along the lines of Haruki Murakami or Margret Atwood.

Anyways, most of the time I feel disappointed. Mostly because most of the writers seem to actively disdain literature as a medium. They seem to write mostly because they're focused on getting a HBO or Netflix series rather than advancing literature as a medium. Hardly any of them are actively reading and if they are it's mostly very popular fantasy series, or Brandon Sanderson who funnels money to the Mormon church to oppress gay people and women. No one seems to be interested in tackling the human condition or producing quality work, rather they use writing for their worldbuilding ideas when they would be better served playing D&D instead.

I wonder what's causing this. Is it because people hope to become the next GRRM or J.K. Rowling?
