Where does horror sit for you guys?

In terms of quality I mean. I do know that horror can lean on the pulpy side. Writers like Stephen King for example. Though I do think that his short stories are better than his novels and are more tightly plotted and thought through. That said, I've been a horror fan and a fan of literature for a long time. I do think that horror holds up to a lot of literary books. In modern times we have John Langan, who I think is doing excellent work in the genre. That's not mentioning older horror either. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is in my opinion, the greatest novel of all time. It's the book that made me fall in love with reading in general. There is also Shirley Jackson's haunting of hill house, the lottery, the sundial, and we have always lived in the castle. In addition there's The Monk by Matthew Lewis, H.P. Lovecraft's work, and Thomas Ligotti who also wrote the non-fiction book the conspiracy against the human race. Not to mention Beloved by Toni Morrison, which I'm aware isn't wholly horror, but it has gothic horror elements.

So overall, do you think that horror is a genre worthy of literary discussion?
