My senior year of high school we had to read “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin in my AP Lit class. I had very mixed feelings on the book as did the rest of society at the time of its writing, but I was curious to what you all thought? As a man, I don’t think I can truly understand Edna’s perspective on everything. I often saw her as ungrateful for what she had and the fact that she was unfaithful to her husband (who granted, was rough around the edges) really left a sour taste in my mouth regarding my perception of her. But I also understood how she felt trapped, bound to a path in life she only set foot in initially out of rebellion. I don’t understand how she could be so detached from her children though, that is what broke my heart the most throughout the whole story. It has been a year since I read it so I apologize if I misquoted anything or am remembering things wrong. Any thoughts?
