New Year, Same Life? Reflections on Change, Progress, and My journey of online Self-Learning journal

2 months ago 140

I’ve always found the whole ‘New Year, New Me’ concept a bit… idealistic. Life doesn’t magically reset; the same troubles linger, and we remain where we are. My Animal Crossing villager, Moe, even said, “Why do we even need a new year? The old one worked just fine, didn’t it?” That hit home for me this year.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve given up on growth. My life took an unexpected turn when I had to leave my bachelor’s program due to personal reasons and leave a country I lived for half my life. It felt like I’d lost all direction, but I wasn’t ready to let that define me. I turned to self-learning, which gave me a new purpose—and let me tell you, it’s been a wild mix of inspiration, frustration, and joy.

To keep myself motivated, I started a public Instagram account (@cryptic_experimenter_journey) as a diary/journal to document my progress. Why? Because self-learning can be lonely and overwhelming. Documenting my journey has kept me inspired and accountable. From completing courses to gaming breaks, I’ve shared it all. Over time, it’s become more than just an account—it’s a reminder of persistence and the beauty of progress, no matter how small.

As I reflect on the new year, I don’t see it as a magical reset but as a continuation of the journey I’m already on. For me, progress isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment—it’s about finding joy in the small victories, like mastering a Python algorithm or creating a cozy Animal Crossing home.

What about you? Do you see the new year as a time for change, or do you take it one day at a time, like me? What do you think of my online journal. Would love to hear your thoughts.
