I teach first year composition classes and usually use Neil Gaiman's "Instructions" as an introduction to elements of genre: tropes, archetypes, etc. In the past Ive asked students to choose a genre and write a how to in any style they'd like.
Because of everything that's going on with him, I'd like to look at some other options for poems/short stories that can inspire their writing. The only one I can think of is Diana Wynne Jones's "A Tough Guide to Fantasyland."
Do you have any poems/short stories that read like a how to for a specific genre?
