I wonder if this is maybe a dumb question, because I haven't been in this sub very long. There was a conversation here a few days ago about Kerouac, that led me to pick him up again after many years. I grabbed The Subterraneans and Desolation Angels from the local used bookstore, and started The Subterraneans tonight. I'm interested in the subject/setting, but I'm so annoyed by his prose. I realize this is one of his earliest books, and obviously Kerouac is well known for having this stream of consciousness style, so I'm not complaining, I'm just curious:
I'm wondering - is there anyone who sort of covers similar topics and milieu, but with a much more disciplined style? Doesn't have to be that exact Beat era. I do like Kerouac's earnestness, so not really looking for someone being very cynical.
Just curious if it's out there, if so I would love to check it out.
Thanks in advance. 🙏🏼
