Is it just me, or are people just more on edge these days?

Now I'm not talking about people on the internet. That feels like preaching to the choir. And I'm not even talking about people misbehaving outside in public. That also feels like preaching to the choir.

I'm more so talking about people just always appear to be on guard. Like they fully act like everyone around them is gonna jump them. Even with my examples, just outside my house, I was out putting something into the trunk of my car. A neighbor was walking his dog (on his phone the whole time too, that's another thing we can address in another thread lol), and he was approaching where I was with my car. I give him a very subtle and friendly smile and nod, and he suddenly picks up the pace to head back inside. Another day, I was getting the mail, and this time another neighbor is walking her dog. Her dog stopped to smell a pole near the mailbox, so she's waiting for it to do its dog thing. As soon as I approach, I also give a little passing hi and nod. She doesn't even look at me when she suddenly pulls her dog away and again briskly walks away.

Again, these are people who live right on my street (not knowing your neighbors, again can be another topic for another thread). So I've just been thinking and then remembering other times like this, which made me wonder, well the title.
