From technology to interior design to fashion to business and beyond, sleek minimalism and a bare-bones approach have reigned supreme recently, it seems. (I’m living in the USA.)
Reading literature that does not attempt to become as small and as little and as convenient as possible is refreshing. There’s something so beautiful and human about reading a novel that doesn’t aspire to be the simplest version of itself.
I’d much rather read a thoughtful, 10-page description of some foreign setting or small interaction between characters in a well-written novel than endure some stripped down, heartless prose that is more empty than full.
It seems with modern technology—and attention spans built for this—many of us view deep, thoughtful writing that spares no detail as more of a slog than a treat.
I once felt this way!
As soon as I stopped gripping so tightly in my attempt to control my understanding and gave in to what I was reading, I began appreciating the details, word choice, etc.
While I’m very much a minimalist in my physical life—owning as little as possible and stripping away all the “stuff” that I can—I’m recently appreciating more expansive prose.
