I might be an idiot

I submitted a credit check to someone that I was planning to rent a room from and now they are not answering me, I’m thinking this was a scam. How do I go about protecting my identity? I did give my social security and all my information. Ps. I know this was very naive so I don’t need any comments telling me how much of an idiot I am.. just need help
