How should I approach reading?

Hello everyone, I’m new to this subreddit and I come with a specific purpose. I want to learn how to read effectively. I am getting back into reading and it’s nice, but I find myself forgetting the points of books and chapters.

I’ve started writing in my books. Mostly random thoughts and definitions. I would love to hear how others approach reading with purpose. It would be interesting to hear from everyone, from people with literature degrees to those who just have a passion for literary analysis.
