General Consensus of r/literature towards Ocean Vuong’s On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous

2 weeks ago 12

It took me three weeks to finish the said book by one of today’s most popular writer, the same amount of time it took me to finish Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray; stylistic poetic novels, except Wilde’s was written a century ago, so it was very understandable why it took me such time. For Vuong’s writing style, the almost-metaphorical paragraphs about any single thing was taking me out. Like it was a jarring read, just write the situation as it is. I know a lot would say that it is okay that it is not for me, that is true; however, I guess, what worrying me is that, at least, in my space, Ocean Vuong heralded as the best writer in my Southeast Asian scene—when there are much better diaspora writers out there in the community.
