Gabriel García Márquez, hack?

2 days ago 72

To be fair, I have only read 100 years of solitude and love in the time of cholera... but also to be fair, I think those are his two most famous books, for the former winning a nobel prize

He's obviously a great technical writer, his stories flow beautifully and are easy to understand while conveying subtle complexities... but I just feel like his work is kind of boring? A little too straight forward, accessible (in a bad way), and neither cognitively demanding nor conceptually complex.

As I read his books, it almost felt like I was reading Harry Potter or Twilight, but for people who fancy themselves as too sophisticated for YA novels.

Am I missing something? He has some great little descriptions here and there, and interesting nuances, but as a whole I just felt like his work isn't stimulating. I'd argue that a author that is comparable in style and eloquence, but has much deeper and more complex subtext would be Camu.
