I can understand not liking the man and being put off by his work for its experimentation and seeming glamorization of drugs and various other ills of society (pedophilia, for one thing), but I think to dismiss his talent or creativity is to be remarkably close-minded and, frankly, hard to take seriously.
I don't want to dismiss anyone's opinion. But in my own opinion, the man's genius is apparent in the unique toying of narrative structure present in his work, and his openness about the various realities he has himself experienced is a kind of brutal, equally self-effacing and self-aggrandizing honesty that more writers should aspire to. His language is beautiful, even when describing scenes of vile debasement or violence.
I also think he represents the subculture of writers who went through the entire 'writing in a drug fueled haze in the interzone.' Maybe one of the best writers to come out of that scene. Thoughts?
