Most of the reading I've done in my life has been almost entirely academic in nature, so I have never really considered things like pacing and prose and foreshadowing and such...or the do's and don'ts of fiction writing (or any writing really). I actually didn't even know what prose was until last week because it isn't something that ever mattered when reading about particle physics and such.
I know some people are able to read something and pick it apart and just analyze it deeply and really talk about the finer parts of a book...and I just recently got into reading for fun (still trying to find what I like). So, I am just curious if becoming more knowledgeable and analytical has made reading more or less enjoyable for you?
The studious part of myself thinks it would be enjoyable, but part of me also feels it would take me out of the book if I am purposely (or not) scanning for literary devices throughout a book. Currently, I just read. I don't put much thought into it...just read the story. However, this leaves me little to offer when it comes to discussing a book or author with someone. My basis for whether or not I thought a book was good is based only on how original I thought the ideas were, how compelling the story and characters were, and how captivating it was. There are those books you start to read and can't put down...and others you pick up because you rented it and feel you have to finish it...at least for me lol. Just curious to hear your thoughts on this!
