I personally am often delighted by books in the sub-genre which might be called "children's books for adults." I don't exactly know what the rules are for this sub-genre, it has fuzzy edges and can encompass a lot of different things. But I hope you get the concept. There are some serious failures in this sub-genre, too. Sometimes publishers call them "fables" or similar when selling them to mainstream adult buyers.
Here are some that I really liked --
- The Mouse and His Child by Russel Hoban
- The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (and no, I'm not his co-religionist)
- The Journey of Ibn Fattouma by Naguib Mahfouz
- almost anything by Roald Dahl
Here are a few that I found unpleasant --
- The Alchemist by P. Coelho
- Jonathan Livingston Seagull by R. Bach
