Broward Referendums

1 week ago 22

I was looking over my ballot and was sort of confused over the referendums. I read the vote411 explanations and understand what their purposes are, but I still have questions.

  1. The first referendum says it would amend the required membership categories of the advisory housing council (i.e one person has to be a homeless nonprofit CEO, one person has to be a Section 8 recipient, one person has to be a county commissioner, etc.). I'm not necessarily opposed to this, but I am concerned because they don't say how they are going to amend the categories. I think its important to have people of varying income levels and professions on the housing council, and I don't want to vote a referendum that could undo that. But the referendum is very vague about what categories they want to change, so I was wondering if anyone has any insight on what the actual impact would be if it were to pass?
  2. The second referendum is more straightforward and basically just incorporates the school district into the list of employees that Inspector General is allowed to investigate. This doesn't seem like a bad thing to me, but I am afraid it might have adverse effects on education quality, such as potential stricter enforcement of state education laws like the Stop WOKE Act (which basically just bans teachers from mentioning racism, sexuality, and gender identity). I'm honestly really conflicted because I do think its important to have a body that can investigate and hold school officials accountable for potential mismanagement and inappropriate fund-use, I'm still very concerned about what it could mean for teachers who aren't actually doing anything wrong but are subject to crooked state laws. Are my suspicions unfounded, or is it within the realm of possibility that the Inspector General would likely pursue these types of issues?
