I recently ordered an expensive collector's edition of a classic novel....and was sent an inexpensive edition by a totally different publisher.
On eBay or Amazon or pretty much any other online retailer, I would have been sent a prepaid return label because I was sent the incorrect item.
On AbeBooks, though, they want me to pay to ship it back to get a refund. This is obviously ridiculous and I'm also pretty sure illegal in the US under federal law. I would also note that this is the policy of AbeBooks, not the individual seller.
My next step is disputing the payment. I wish I'd used PayPal as it's very easy to open a claim with them; I paid with a credit card through my bank and now have to figure out how to open a case, which is just a huge pain.
Unfortunately a lot of online sellers list books as in better condition than they actually are so I end up returning them frequently—though usually I at least get the edition I ordered—and I'm no longer willing to take that risk with AbeBooks.
This is the last time I'll be ordering from them.
