18, about to start university, but feeling lost and overwhelmed with family pressure

1 day ago 4

Hey everyone,

I’m turning 18 next month and I’ve been accepted to a top 1% university in Canada for finance. My long-term goal is to work in wealth management, but right now I’m feeling really stressed and confused.

My parents have been in Canada for over 20 years, but they don’t like it here anymore and want to move back to our home country in the Balkans. They plan on selling everything and moving back when I graduate, which will be in about 4 years. I told them I don’t want to live there because the pay and opportunities aren’t as good. They understand, and they also don’t want me to work there either.

My plan is to work in Europe, maybe Switzerland or Germany, because I feel like life is better there, better nature, food, everything. But I don’t speak any languages other than English and Albanian, and I’m not sure how I’ll get a job or what the rules are when I’m done with university.

I’m just really stressed out and feel lost because it feels like there’s so much pressure on me. I don’t know how to make my goals match with my family’s plans, and everything feels uncertain.

Any advice on how to deal with this would be much appreciated.
